As mission scenarios for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) become more demanding, and require extended periods without operator contact perhaps in hostile environments, it will be essential to able to detect possible obstructions, to evaluate the disposition of the environment and to re-plan the mission with a response time that matches the vehicle kinematics. Inside the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) programme “Battlefield Access UUV ” (BAUUV) this study, developed at the Ocean Systems Laboratory (OSL), aims to significantly advance and de-risk technologies for Collision, Obstacle Avoidance and Escape (COAE) – needed to cope with these situations within a highly demanding military environment. 1
